CALLUM SCHUSTER

Callum Schuster's work exemplifies an ongoing investigation into the praxis of painting. By analyzing the material components of the painted object and its mode of production, the artist is able to posit alternatives using the very medium he is questioning. Rather than creating a visual escape for the viewer, the aim is to engender self-reflexive environments and experiences. 

In producing his Akin to Skin series, Schuster discovered that the longer the paint stayed wet (or “alive”), the more the surface started to emulate the process of human aging. The drying process revealed a texture that was uncannily similar to the way time is worn on human skin. In working with different materials, Schuster discovered that the textural qualities were dependent on the geographic source of materials and the environment in which the work is made. For him, "the marks worn on our bodies and on the objects around us represent signs of life, that is, indexes of time that tell a story." 

Schuster's work has been exhibited in a number of solo and group exhibitions, including Palindrome Dome Metronome Home at O'Born Contemporary (Toronto), More Than Two (curated by Micah Lexier) at The Power Plant (Toronto), an off-site exhibition at the Havana Biennale, as well as public installations for the City of Toronto's Nuit Blanche. Schuster has an upcoming show with Galerie Anita Beckers in Frankfurt in 2017.
