Curated: Isolation series by Jasmine Cardenas

“During the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, my studio space in Toronto was temporarily closed. Over the next few weeks I began to sketch and find new ways of making work in my home, thus began my Isolation Series. Here Together and Mood Swingin’ are the first two paintings created in this series. Being in lockdown with my partner in a one-bedroom apartment, these works are loosely figurative and are a direct reflection of my environment and state of mind. I would translate drawings on paper into these saturated, sculptural paintings. Experimenting with materials, I worked with oil paint and fine pumice stone, creating a highly textural surface. The tactile process of mixing pigment and stone gave me an outlet. A moment to temporarily disconnect from the unknown reality happening among us, and to focus on the process of mixing and applying paint.”
